The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its dominance in the Ayawaso East Constituency following a resounding victory by its candidate, Baba Jamal, in the by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The poll was organised to fill the parliamentary vacancy occasioned by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January.
Baba Jamal triumphed over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Baba Ali, as well as independent aspirant Umaru Sanda Muhammed, in a contest that attracted considerable public and political attention. His victory largely mirrored projections by research firm Global InfoAnalytics, which had forecast a commanding lead for the NDC candidate ahead of the vote.
A pre-election survey conducted between February 28 and March 1 projected that Baba Jamal would secure approximately 75 percent of the ballots cast, with Baba Ali trailing at a significant margin. The remaining candidates were expected to garner only marginal support.
The outcome not only consolidates the NDC’s grip on the constituency but also marks Baba Jamal’s return to parliamentary service. He previously represented the Akwatia Constituency in Parliament and later served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.
Although the election was conducted peacefully under the supervision of electoral officials and security personnel, voter turnout across several polling stations was conspicuously low.
