NPP Chair Race: Wontumi Rallies Grassroots Support in Northern Ghana

Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has intensified his bid for the party’s national chairmanship following a tour of the five Northern regions.

The tour, which covered the Northern, Savannah, North East, Upper East and Upper West regions, focused on engaging party executives and grassroots members, while outlining his vision for the future of the NPP.

Addressing party faithful during the visits, Chairman Wontumi emphasized the need for strong grassroots participation, describing it as central to the party’s electoral success.

“I will be a working National Chairman,” he stated repeatedly, pledging to remain accessible and actively involved in strengthening party structures across the country.

According to him, effective leadership within the NPP must be grounded in constant engagement with polling station executives, constituency officers, and regional leadership.

Chairman Wontumi, who has served as Ashanti Regional Chairman for three consecutive terms, highlighted his experience as a key asset, noting that his leadership has contributed to maintaining the region as a stronghold of the party.

Some party officials who interacted with him during the tour expressed support for his bid. Bono East Regional Secretary, David Boakye, underscored the importance of grassroots leadership, stating that electoral victory depends largely on mobilizing the party’s base.

Similarly, former Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhadu Jibril, described Chairman Wontumi as one of the few leaders who consistently advocate for the welfare of party executives at various levels.

The tour also comes at a time when the NPP is preparing for internal reorganization, with key national positions expected to be contested ahead of the next general elections.

Observers say Chairman Wontumi’s message of unity, inclusiveness and empowerment appears to be resonating with sections of the party’s grassroots, particularly in the northern parts of the country.

However, his campaign is expected to face competition from other contenders as the party seeks to elect national executives capable of leading it into the next electoral cycle.

Chairman Wontumi maintains that his focus remains on building a stronger, more united party capable of securing victory in future elections.
