Toyota Voxy imports hit 3,570 in first two months of 2026

Ghana has recorded a notable rise in the importation of Toyota Voxy vehicles, with 3,570 units registered in the first two months of 2026, the National Roads and Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed.

According to the NRSA’s technical report submitted on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, registration data shows that 3,570 Voxy vehicles were registered between January and February, compared with 3,687 for the entirety of 2025.

“While only 34% are registered as commercial vehicles, field evidence confirms widespread use of privately registered Voxy vehicles for commercial passenger transport,” the report stated.

The NRSA raised safety concerns over this trend.

Official correspondence from Toyota Tsusho Corporation indicates that only the HiAce, GranAce, and Coaster models are designed for commercial passenger transport.

The Voxy, the company said, is intended as a minivan for young, middle-class families, with a ground clearance of 150mm—significantly lower than the HiAce’s 185mm, a critical factor for long-distance travel on Ghana’s roads.

However, drivers confirmed that many Voxy vehicles used commercially are modified with longer struts and larger tyres to compensate for the low ground clearance.

The NRSA report warns that these modifications compromise road safety, particularly on Ghana’s highways, where passenger transport vehicles face higher stress and uneven terrain, hence the decision to ban the vehicle for commercial purposes.
