‘Retract and Apologise or Face Lawsuit’ – Godfred Dame Warns Ofosu Kwakye

Former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has issued a formal demand to the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, to retract and apologise over what he describes as “false and malicious” allegations made against him.

In a letter dated March 12, 2026, but only now sighted by the media, Mr. Dame gave Mr. Kwakye Ofosu seven days to retract the statements, apologise, and remove the said publication from all online platforms or face legal action.

The demand stems from comments made by Mr. Kwakye Ofosu during Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme on October 10, 2025, where he alleged that Mr. Dame, while serving as Attorney-General between 2021 and 2025, failed to act on a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) report on alleged illegal mining activities involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.

According to Mr. Dame, the allegations suggested he was aware of the report but deliberately failed to act, thereby implying complicity in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Quoting portions of the programme, Mr. Dame noted that Mr. Kwakye Ofosu claimed: “The Attorney-General of the day cannot claim that he didn’t know about the report.” He further alleged that Mr. Dame’s inaction amounted to complicity.

However, Mr. Dame insists the claims are entirely false and have been publicly disproven. He cited a Right to Information (RTI) request filed by a private legal practitioner, Jonathan Asare, to verify the claims.

In a response dated December 22, 2025, and signed by an Information Officer at the Office of the Attorney-General, Lydia Attoh, the Ministry clarified that no such CID docket on Akonta Mining was submitted to Mr. Dame or the office between 2022 and 2024.

The response further indicated that the docket in question was only presented to the Attorney-General’s office on September 15, 2025—after Mr. Dame had left office.

Mr. Dame argues that the RTI response completely undermines Mr. Kwakye Ofosu’s claims and exposes them as baseless.

He further described the allegations as “sinister, reckless and malicious,” stressing that as a government communications minister, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu had the means to verify the accuracy of such claims before making them public.

“The recklessness with which you published the words complained of betrays the deep-seated malice you bear against me,” portions of the letter stated.

Mr. Dame also expressed concern about the reputational damage caused, noting that the claims were widely circulated across media platforms and portrayed him as complicit in criminal activity.

He pointed to his over two decades of legal practice and his tenure as Attorney-General, during which he represented Ghana in various international forums, including the United Nations, African Union and ECOWAS, as evidence of his professional standing.

The former Attorney-General warned that failure by Mr. Kwakye Ofosu to comply with the demands within the stipulated period would result in legal action against him and the owners of Metro TV for defamation, seeking punitive and aggravated damages.

The development sets the stage for a potential high-profile legal battle between two prominent political figures, with implications for public discourse and accountability in political communication.
