Police Dismantle Obuasi–Dunkwa Highway Robbery Gang; Six Arrested, Arms Network Uncovered

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has dismantled a suspected armed robbery gang operating along the Obuasi–Dunkwa highway following intelligence-led operations carried out between March 10 and March 11.

According to the police, the operation began around 11:00 a.m. on March 10 after officers received information that a group of armed men had gathered in a bush near Obuasi to plan a robbery attack on motorists using the highway.

When officers moved in on the suspects, they encountered four armed men at the location. The suspects allegedly opened fire on the police and attempted to flee the scene. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two of the suspects were fatally wounded while two others escaped with gunshot injuries.

Subsequent follow-up operations led to the arrest of six suspects believed to be linked to the robbery syndicate. Investigations also uncovered what police describe as a broader illegal arms supply network operating in Asawase.

During the operation, police retrieved a number of weapons and ammunition believed to have been used by the gang. The items recovered include an AK-47 rifle with serial number 68104599 loaded with 28 rounds of 7.62×39 mm ammunition, a pump-action shotgun with five BB cartridges, eight additional rounds of 7.62×39 mm ammunition, and one spent BB cartridge. In total, 36 rounds of ammunition were seized.

The Ashanti South Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Stephen Antwi, said the command remains committed to intensifying intelligence-driven operations aimed at clamping down on armed robbery and the proliferation of illegal firearms across the country.

Police say investigations are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects and dismantle the full network behind the arms supply.
