Jinapor Clarifies Prepaid Meter Rollout for Public Sector

Minister for Energy and Green Transitions, John Abu Jinapor, has clarified government plans to install prepaid electricity meters across state institutions, describing the move as part of efforts to improve efficiency in energy consumption and revenue collection.

He disclosed that Cabinet has approved the rollout of the initiative, although a few institutions will be exempted under specific considerations. According to the Minister, several state agencies with outstanding electricity bills have already agreed to structured payment plans to settle their debts.

Mr. Jinapor made these remarks when he appeared before Parliament’s Government Assurance Committee on Tuesday, where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening energy management across the public sector.

In addition, the Minister announced plans to scale up off-grid solar solutions as a cost-saving measure. He noted that government is partnering with the private sector to deploy solar-powered systems, particularly in rural areas and selected public institutions.

The initiative, he explained, is expected to gradually reduce dependence on the national grid while expanding access to reliable and sustainable energy.
