Intensify anti-corruption fight, boycott frivolous pressers – Vitus Azeem urges media

Anti-corruption campaigner Vitus Adaboo Azeem has called for stronger commitment in the fight against corruption, urging both institutions and the media to play more proactive and disciplined roles in promoting accountability.

Speaking at the National Forum on Media and the Fight Against Corruption in Accra on Thursday, March 26, Mr. Azeem stressed that organisations leading the anti-corruption agenda must intensify their efforts to deliver tangible results.

The former Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative underscored the critical role of the media in strengthening accountability systems, noting that journalists must be more intentional in their engagement with public institutions to avoid legitimising unproductive activities.

He urged anti-corruption bodies such as the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition and Transparency International Ghana to step up their interventions in the fight against graft.

“Institutions like the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, Transparency International Ghana and others must intensify their fight against corruption,” he said.

Mr. Azeem further encouraged journalists to be more selective in their coverage of public engagements, including boycotting press conferences he described as unproductive.

“Journalists should be able to boycott press conferences that are frivolous and a waste of time. If MPs abandon Parliament and go and sit at EOCO, the media should not appear there at all. If after an hour the media don’t show up, they will leave,” he stated.

His remarks come amid growing concerns about the effectiveness of anti-corruption efforts in the country, with renewed calls for stronger collaboration between state institutions and the media to confront corruption more decisively.
