The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the public that the Ghana Police Service is fully prepared to provide security for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primaries.
Speaking at a peace pact signing ceremony involving the party’s presidential aspirants, Mr Yohuno revealed that the NPP had formally notified the police weeks ago that security for the primaries would be handled exclusively by the Ghana Police Service.
According to the IGP, the police have since identified all polling centres and completed detailed operational planning to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
“We have identified all the areas where the elections will take place. There are 276 plus one polling centres, and we have finalised our operational plans,” he stated.
Mr Yohuno explained that the police leadership has engaged all regional commanders responsible for the various polling areas and reviewed preparations extensively ahead of the exercise.
“We have met all our regional commanders and gone over the preparations thoroughly. We are ready to deploy,” he said.
He noted that while the police will take the lead in providing security nationwide, additional military support may be required in Bawku due to the area’s unique security challenges. He disclosed that the police have written to the Minister for the Interior to liaise with the Minister of Defence to facilitate military assistance in the area.
“In all other parts of the country, the military will be on standby, with the police taking full responsibility for security,” the IGP added.
Mr Yohuno further disclosed that a minimum of 70 police personnel will be deployed to each polling station, alongside the nationwide deployment of senior officers to supervise operations.
“At least 70 officers will be deployed to each polling station. We have also deployed senior officers across the country to oversee the process,” he said.
He outlined a layered security strategy involving inner, middle, and outer deployment, with the outer perimeter heavily reinforced.
“The deployment will be in layers—inner, middle, and outer—with strong reinforcement at the outer level,” he explained.
The IGP assured stakeholders that the police have undergone extensive training and preparation, adding that regional commanders across the country have expressed confidence in their readiness.
“Our commanders have assured us that they are fully prepared, even if the election were to be held today,” he stated.
Mr Yohuno thanked the NPP leadership for the confidence shown in the Ghana Police Service, describing it as a demonstration of trust in the professionalism of the police.
The peace pact signing forms part of the NPP’s efforts to ensure peaceful internal elections and promote unity as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
