The Minority Caucus in Parliament says the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) path back to political power lies in unity rather than political slogans, following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
In a statement signed by Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Caucus said the loss offered an “invaluable lesson,” stressing that unity remains the party’s most powerful asset.
“The painful 2024 electoral defeat taught us an invaluable lesson: unity is not merely a political slogan but our fundamental source of strength,” the statement said. “History demonstrates that when the NPP presents a united front, we are formidable. Our victories in 2000, 2004, 2016, and 2020 stand as a testament to this truth.”
The Minority urged all party structures—particularly constituency executives, polling station organisers and grassroots volunteers across the country—to rally behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
According to the Caucus, the grassroots form the backbone of the party’s political machinery and must play a leading role in rebuilding and strengthening internal cohesion. It called on party faithful, from Tamale to Takoradi and Aflao to Axim, to channel their energies into promoting unity while holding the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) accountable for its stewardship of the country.
The statement further pledged the Minority’s full support to Dr. Bawumia, noting that both current and former NPP Members of Parliament possess significant experience to aid the party’s rebuilding efforts.
It also highlighted the NPP’s parliamentary and governance achievements, including winning 169 parliamentary seats in 2016 and 137 seats in 2020, as well as implementing major policies such as the Free Senior High School programme, extensive infrastructure development and key digital economy initiatives.
According to the Minority Caucus, this collective experience places the party in a strong position to provide strategic direction as preparations intensify toward the 2028 elections.
“The task ahead requires discipline, unity and collective purpose,” the statement added, emphasising that only a united NPP can regain the confidence of Ghanaians and return to power.
