I wish to take this opportunity to share my reflections on the progress and direction of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while also extending my heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his leadership, commitment, and continued service to our nation, Ghana.
His dedication to economic transformation, digital innovation, and inclusive development has positioned him as a central pillar in shaping Ghana’s future, even though his vision may not have been fully understood prior to the 2024 elections. The factors that led to this have been widely discussed and are clearly multifaceted, with many still in the public domain.
However, his election yesterday demonstrates that the NPP continues to value his pragmatic ideas as a pure and strategic pathway for strengthening our foundations and advancing Ghana’s transformation agenda. The speech delivered by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inherently affirmed this direction. The renewed sense of hope within the NPP following Dr. Bawumia’s election is a testament to the trust and faith reposed in his qualities, leadership, and vision.
That said, as party members and citizens who believe in democratic growth and institutional strength, it is important that we turn attention to areas requiring structural action within the party as we work to uplift the party from its doldrums and re-energise our grassroots base. One such issue is the situation of Orphan Constituencies, constituencies currently without parliamentary representation under the party’s banner, estimated to be around 188.
I respectfully propose that, following the flagbearer elections, it would be in the party’s interest to conduct elections in these Orphan Constituencies within six months, or at the very least before the end of 2026. Doing so would:
a. Strengthen grassroots political participation
b. Restore full party structure and legitimacy at the constituency level
c. Enhance mobilisation and readiness ahead of national political activities, especially the 2028 elections
d. Restore stability, remove uncertainties surrounding parliamentary contests, and give clarity and confidence ahead of 2028
e. Give elected parliamentary candidates the opportunity to establish their campaign structures early
f. Form constituency mediation and reconciliation committees to resolve internal issues, thereby restoring voice, representation, and participation in party affairs
g. Allow newly elected parliamentary candidates sufficient time to campaign effectively, reach all communities, and build coordinated and inclusive campaign teams
h. Enable candidates to raise adequate campaign funds from interested stakeholders, recognising that elections remain expensive, with reports from CDD Ghana in 2024 estimating costs around GHC 10 million
i. Reinforce democratic principles within party organisation
It is important to underscore that timely parliamentary elections in the Orphan Constituencies will not only energise the base but also demonstrate the NPP’s commitment to fairness, inclusion, and organisational discipline.
Our party has always thrived when its structures are active, representative, and rooted in the people. Addressing the status of Orphan Constituencies is therefore not merely administrative, it is strategic and essential for unity and forward momentum.
Once again, I congratulate H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and encourage continued dialogue, participation, and institutional strengthening within our great party.
Forward Ever, Backward Never.
