Police Seize Suspected Cannabis Worth Over GH₵1.4m in Impounded Truck in Oti Region

Police in the Oti Region have uncovered a large consignment of suspected cannabis valued at more than GH₵1.4 million from a truck that was intercepted late last year.

The Volvo truck, bearing registration number GC 3522-09, was stopped at the Bonakye checkpoint on December 29, 2025, while travelling towards Passa. According to the Police, the interception followed intelligence indicating that the vehicle was transporting illicit goods.

In a statement signed by the Oti Regional Public Affairs Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Nchor, the driver and one other occupant reportedly fled the scene immediately after the vehicle was halted, abandoning the truck with the ignition key still inside.

Following the incident, the Police secured a court order to conduct a search of the vehicle. On February 24, 2026, the Jasikan Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Lambert Y. Kerieba, granted authorisation for the truck to be opened and examined.

The exercise was carried out at Kwanta in the presence of personnel from the Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Intelligence Bureau, Defence Intelligence, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Narcotics Control Commission in Jasikan, as well as members of the media.

Upon inspection, officers discovered 320 cartons of bottled mineral water loaded in the truck. However, concealed beneath the cartons were 91 bales of suspected cannabis.

Police disclosed that the 91 bales contained 7,173 slabs of the suspected substance, with an estimated street value exceeding GH₵1.4 million.

The seized exhibits have since been retained to assist ongoing investigations as authorities intensify efforts to track down the suspects and dismantle the network behind the shipment.

The Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and urged the public to volunteer credible information to support crime prevention and detection efforts in the region.
