A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Kofi Tonto, has stated that the decisive victory of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2026 NPP presidential primaries reflects the delegates’ rejection of arrogance, disrespect, and division within the party.
Speaking in an interview with Asare Bediako on Bethel Radio and TV in the United Kingdom after the primaries, Mr. Tontoh said the outcome of the election sends a strong message that the NPP will not tolerate actions or attitudes that undermine party unity.
According to him, the overwhelming support shown for Dr. Bawumia demonstrates the delegates’ desire for discipline, respect, and cohesion as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Tontoh cited several instances in which former presidential aspirant Hon. Kennedy Agyapong allegedly displayed disrespect toward the party and its leadership, including the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia. He noted that such conduct, coupled with a refusal to apologise, contributed to the delegates’ stance during the primaries.
“The delegates have clearly shown that the NPP is not ready to entertain division, arrogance, or disrespect,” he said.
However, Mr. Tontoh clarified that he does not have the authority to determine whether Hon. Kennedy Agyapong will be actively involved in the party’s national campaign ahead of the 2028 elections. He emphasized that the NPP remains open to all members and will welcome unity as it works toward electoral victory.
The NPP recently concluded its presidential primaries, with Dr. Bawumia emerging as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Provisional figures released from the National Collation Centre at the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters in Accra project Dr Bawumia as the clear winner, with 110,643 votes, representing 56.5 per cent of the total valid votes cast.
With the result crossing the required 50 per cent threshold, the outcome eliminates the need for a run-off and confirms Dr Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.8 per cent, while the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, came third with 36,303 votes, accounting for 18.5 per cent.
The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, polled 1,999 votes, representing 1.0 per cent, while former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyepong, secured 402 votes, amounting to 0.2 per cent of the valid votes.
In all, a total of 195,901 valid votes were cast in the primary, with 561 ballots rejected.
