The Majority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has called for the immediate cancellation of the party’s parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency over alleged vote-buying.
In a statement dated February 8, 2026, and signed by Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga, the caucus said it had taken notice of widely circulated allegations of electoral malpractice during the just-ended primary held in the Greater Accra Region.
According to the caucus, the allegations run contrary to the party’s commitment to promoting integrity and transparency in Ghana’s political landscape.
“The Members of the Majority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress in Parliament have become aware of widely circulated allegations of vote-buying in the just-concluded NDC parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency,” the statement said.
The caucus strongly condemned the alleged acts, describing them as inconsistent with the NDC’s agenda to reset Ghana’s politics and strengthen internal democratic processes.
Following what it described as extensive deliberations, the caucus announced that its leadership had formally communicated its position to the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC.
It is demanding that the results of the primary be annulled with immediate effect. The caucus further called for strict sanctions against individuals found culpable in the alleged malpractice.
“That the NDC parliamentary primary organised in the Ayawaso East Constituency be annulled immediately,” the statement urged.
It also recommended that any candidate who is found to have engaged in vote-buying or other unethical conduct should be barred from contesting in any rerun of the primary.
The caucus reaffirmed its commitment to promoting accountability and integrity within the party, stressing that such measures are necessary to maintain public confidence in the NDC’s democratic processes.
The Ayawaso East primary, held on February 7, 2026, saw Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, emerge victorious after polling 431 votes to defeat his closest contender, Hajia Amina Adam, who secured 399 votes.
The party is yet to officially respond to the demands made by the Majority Caucus.
