The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is holding its parliamentary primary today, Saturday, February 7, to select a candidate to represent the party in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election.
The exercise follows the successful vetting of five aspirants who filed nominations to contest the seat. The vetting process took place at the party’s Greater Accra Regional Office and cleared all aspirants to participate in the primary.
After the vetting, the contestants balloted for their positions on the ballot paper ahead of today’s election.
The candidates, according to the order of balloting, are Mohammed Ramme, the NDC Ayawaso East Constituency Chairman; Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament; Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; Yakubu Azindow; and Najib Mohammed.
Speaking to journalists after the vetting exercise, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the NDC, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, commended the aspirants for their cooperation and commitment to the party’s internal democratic processes.
He noted that the party leadership had urged all contestants to conduct their campaigns peacefully and responsibly to ensure a credible and successful primary.
The winner of today’s primary will represent the NDC in the forthcoming by-election, which is expected to be keenly contested as parties position themselves to secure the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat.
Party officials say adequate arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth voting process for delegates across the constituency.
