The Minority Caucus in Parliament has thrown its weight behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following his emphatic victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, signalling a renewed drive for unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The delegation, led by the Minority Leadership, paid a courtesy call on Dr. Bawumia just days after he secured a commanding mandate from party delegates across the country, defeating four other contenders in one of the party’s most competitive internal elections in recent years.
Victory Reshaping the NPP’s Future
Dr. Bawumia emerged as the clear winner of the January 31, 2026 presidential primaries after polling 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent of total valid votes cast.
Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong finished second with 46,554 votes (23.76%), while Dr. Bryan Acheampong secured 36,303 votes (18.53%) to place third. Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong recorded marginal figures.
The victory officially positions Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, with heightened expectations that he can lead the party back to power after its defeat in the 2024 polls.
Minority Caucus Signals Unity
In what political observers describe as a strong gesture of reconciliation, Minority Members of Parliament visited Dr. Bawumia’s residence to congratulate him and pledge their readiness to work closely with his leadership.
The visit is widely seen as a significant step toward healing internal divisions that surfaced during the primaries, where some MPs were perceived to have supported rival aspirants, particularly Kennedy Agyapong.
Despite the tensions that often accompany internal contests, the caucus’ visit sent a clear message that the parliamentary wing of the party is ready to unite behind its elected leader.
Bawumia Preaches Reconciliation
Addressing the MPs, Dr. Bawumia adopted a conciliatory tone, declaring that he had forgiven those who criticised him during the campaign period and was focused solely on securing victory for the party.
“My mind is open, my heart is open, and my hands are open,” he said, emphasising his willingness to work with all party members committed to rebuilding the NPP.
He stressed that internal elections are a natural part of democratic growth and should not create lasting divisions, urging members to set aside personal rivalries and work collectively toward victory.
MPs Pledge Loyalty and Strategic Collaboration
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed the caucus’ loyalty to the new flagbearer and pledged consistent engagement with his leadership to shape the party’s direction.
He acknowledged the challenges the party has faced in opposition since 2024, noting that MPs had often operated without coordinated national direction.
“With you now as the anchor man, we look up to you for vision and direction,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He cautioned members against factional politics and internal disagreements, warning that such tendencies could undermine the party’s electoral prospects.
Rebuilding After the 2024 Setback
The Minority Leader also highlighted the party’s reduced parliamentary representation, noting that the NPP’s numbers had declined from 169 seats in 2017 to 87 MPs after the 2024 elections.
He urged MPs to intensify grassroots engagement within their constituencies to rebuild support and strengthen the party’s parliamentary presence ahead of 2028.
Dr. Bawumia expressed optimism that the party’s 2024 electoral defeat could be reversed, arguing that data suggests the NDC’s voter base remained largely stable while the NPP suffered from voter apathy among its supporters.
According to him, revitalising inactive supporters and restoring confidence in the party’s message will be key to reclaiming power.
A Renewed Call for Unity
The meeting ended with a strong message of unity, with Dr. Bawumia assuring MPs that personal grievances would not influence leadership decisions.
He pledged full support for party candidates and stakeholders capable of delivering electoral victory, while the Minority Caucus reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening parliamentary performance and presenting a united front to the Ghanaian public.
The Road to 2028
The Minority MPs’ show of support marks one of the first major post-primary unity efforts within the NPP as the party begins the process of consolidating around Dr. Bawumia’s leadership in preparation for the 2028 elections.
