Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Birmingham Chapter, Prince Kwadwo Osei, popularly known as One in Town, has cautioned against calls for a change in the party’s flagbearer, describing such moves as “disingenuous” and unfair to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking in his personal capacity, Prince Kwadwo Osei said his position is based on conviction, experience, and a careful review of the circumstances surrounding the 2024 general elections.
“Looking at all the issues surrounding the 2024 elections, it would be very disingenuous for us to think that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia needs to be replaced,” he stated.
According to him, while acknowledging that other aspirants within the party may be capable, Dr. Bawumia remains the most suitable candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections.
“Inasmuch as other candidates may be fit, I am of the firm conviction and belief that Dr. Bawumia supersedes all others by every fair denominator we use to judge who should lead the NPP,” he said.
Prince Kwadwo Osei noted that the NPP has a long-standing tradition of standing by leaders it believes in, pointing to former Presidents J.A. Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as examples.
“We believed in President Kufuor and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and gave them another opportunity. I think it is only fair and consistent with our tradition that we do the same for Dr. Bawumia,” he explained.
He further stressed that the NPP is a party that transcends religious, ethnic, and geographical boundaries, and therefore should not be swayed by divisive considerations.
“The NPP transcends religion and boundaries. We are a party that believes in inclusivity, diversity, and opportunity, and Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated these values since he came into the limelight of the party,” he added.
The NPP Birmingham Chairman also appealed to party delegates, particularly those in the United Kingdom, to maintain confidence in the Vice President.
“I urge all delegates, especially those in the UK, to trust Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia once again with their votes. The possibility train has not grounded, and it must not be grounded,” Prince Kwadwo Osei appealed.
He concluded by calling for unity and forward momentum within the party as it prepares for the future.
“We must move forward and not backward. Dr. Bawumia represents our destiny, and I am confident he will deliver for the NPP,” he concluded.
