Ghana Marks World Radio Day 2026 with Focus on AI and Human Voice

Ghana has joined the global community in celebrating World Radio Day 2026, observed annually on February 13. The international day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 and later adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.

The day honours broadcasters worldwide for their voices, the stories they tell, and the vital role radio continues to play in informing, educating, and connecting societies.

This year’s celebration, spearheaded in Ghana by the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), recognises all radio broadcasters—public, commercial, and community stations—under the UNESCO theme: “Radio and Artificial Intelligence – AI is a tool, not a voice.”

According to a statement issued by GIBA, the theme underscores the importance of preserving the human voice at the centre of broadcasting, while responsibly embracing technological innovation and safeguarding editorial independence.

Radio remains one of the most trusted and widely accessible media platforms globally, with unmatched geographical reach. Its strength lies in its ability to reflect societal diversity, promote dialogue, and provide a platform for political, spiritual, social, and environmental discourse.

Broadcasters, therefore, bear the responsibility of serving diverse communities with content that is balanced, inclusive, and credible.

In Ghana, radio continues to play a significant role beyond entertainment by delivering timely and relevant information that shapes public discourse and national development.

As Artificial Intelligence increasingly influences broadcasting—enhancing content creation, interactivity, and delivery—GIBA emphasised that professional judgement, creativity, and public service values must remain paramount. While AI can support innovation, UNESCO notes that public trust is built by broadcasters, not technology.

On behalf of its leadership and Executive Council, GIBA commended radio broadcasters and media professionals across the country for their dedication and service.

The Association further encouraged broadcasters to remain steadfast as the trusted voice of the people, promoting democracy, development, education, and national cohesion.
