The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has rejected claims that vessels operating within Ghana’s maritime waters are not being monitored, describing the assertions as false and misleading.
The Authority, in a press release dated September 22, 2026, said it had taken note of statements made by Mr. Dennis Miracles Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite programmes, alleging that Ghana’s vessel monitoring system was ineffective.
The GMA categorically refuted the claims, insisting that its surveillance system for monitoring vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction remains operational.
According to the Authority, it continues to deploy maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and maintains 24-hour surveillance and monitoring across Ghana’s maritime domain.
The GMA explained that the surveillance system also plays a critical role in monitoring and protecting offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.
It said its monitoring operations are guided by standard operating procedures designed to track vessels, verify their identity and compliance, and support safety, security and environmental protection.
“The suggestion that vessels in Ghana’s waters are not monitored is therefore untrue,” the Authority stated.
The GMA further assured the public of its commitment to continuous surveillance and the protection of Ghana’s maritime interests.
It urged the public to disregard the claims and rely on official communications from the Authority for information concerning maritime surveillance and vessel monitoring in Ghana.
