The Supreme Court has been recognised for upholding the Constitution, protecting human rights, and shaping Ghana’s democratic development.
The commendation was made at a press conference marking the 150th anniversary of the country’s apex court.
Established in 1876, the court has endured periods of political hostility, military interventions, as well as the suspension and abrogation of the Constitution.
Chairperson of the anniversary committee and Justice of the Supreme Court, His Lordship Richard Adjei-Frimpong, said the institution has remained resilient throughout these challenges, continuing to stand firm in its mandate.
“The court has not been spared the misfortunes of political hostility, featured suspensions and abrogation of constitutions, societal criticisms, even condemnation. Some fair, others unfair and in some instances extraordinary legislative realignment.
“In all these however, the court has survived and thrived. In the chapters and verses of this evolution, the court has held on to its fundamental rule of defending the constitution,” he said
The Judiciary has scheduled a month-long celebration in July, with the official launch set for April 16, 2026.
“This is just not going to be a celebration. It shall be a moment of stock taking, lesson learning and strategising into the future,” he said.
