Ibrahim Mahama Rejects Compensation, Demands Justice in Police Assault Case

Renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama has rejected any form of financial compensation following an alleged assault by police officers, insisting that his pursuit is solely for justice and accountability.

Mahama made the remarks after a meeting with the Police Management Board (POMAB) on Thursday, March 26, 2026, as investigations continue into the incident involving members of the Inspector General of Police’s Special Task Force operating the “Black Maria.”

Speaking to journalists after the engagement, the artist was unequivocal about his intentions, stressing that the matter goes beyond personal gain.

“No, we are not looking for compensation. There is no way we are looking for money. Obviously, I don’t need that. It’s not about that. It’s more just about justice,” he said.

According to him, the primary objective is to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the incident are fully established and that any wrongdoing is addressed through appropriate channels.

“We just want to make sure people understand what transpired that day. Because we are all in the country, we are in a democracy, we want to understand what is happening and see how we can solve it,” Mahama added.

He emphasised that seeking justice in such cases is crucial to reinforcing public confidence in state institutions, particularly law enforcement agencies tasked with protecting citizens.

Mahama noted that a transparent and fair process would reassure the public that incidents involving alleged abuse of power are taken seriously and handled with integrity.

“So that when other people are elsewhere, and things like this happen, at least they are assured that in the country they live in, their matter will be taken seriously and there will be some kind of justice,” he stated.

The Police Management Board is expected to continue its probe into the matter, with calls mounting for a thorough and impartial investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
