Kperiga (North East Region), March 17 — A humanitarian initiative by the Hajia Mariama Bawumia Widows Foundation has supported 150 widows in Kperiga, in the Walewale area of the North East Region, in a bid to uplift their welfare and restore dignity among vulnerable members of the community.
The outreach programme, held on March 17, 2026, at the Kperiga Chief’s Palace, was organised in remembrance of the late Hajia Mariama Bawumia, who was widely known for her compassion and dedication to supporting widows and the needy during her lifetime.
As part of the intervention, beneficiaries received essential food items, including 150 bags of 5-kilogram rice, Frytol cooking oil, sachets of tomato paste, and cans of malt drinks.
These items were provided to help ease the daily financial burden on the widows, many of whom have limited sources of income.
The event brought together traditional authorities, political figures, and community stakeholders. In attendance was the Chief of Kperiga, Abuba Bawumia, elder brother of former Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.
Constituency executives, Electoral Area Coordinators, polling station officers, and youth organisers were also present, highlighting strong community support for vulnerable populations.
The Founder of the Foundation, Mrs Mavis Nkum, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to sustaining the vision of the late Hajia Mariama Bawumia. She explained that the Foundation, established in 2023, is driven by a humanitarian mission to support, empower, and restore hope among widows, who are often left to face life’s challenges in isolation.
She noted that Hajia Mariama Bawumia envisioned a society where widows feel valued, empowered, and supported to rebuild their lives with dignity. According to her, the Foundation remains dedicated to preserving this vision through continuous outreach programmes and community-based interventions.
“Although she is no longer with us, her spirit of kindness and generosity continues to guide our work. We are committed to ensuring that her legacy lives on by providing meaningful support to widows across the country,” she said.
The beneficiaries, many of whom were visibly emotional, expressed deep gratitude for the timely intervention. They offered prayers for the organisers and emphasised that the legacy of Hajia Mariama Bawumia would continue to inspire hope and compassion within their communities.
Community members who participated in the programme described it as both timely and impactful, noting that such initiatives play a crucial role in alleviating the hardships faced by widows. They also called on philanthropists, corporate organisations, and non-governmental institutions to support similar efforts aimed at assisting vulnerable groups.
The outreach forms part of the Foundation’s broader strategy to promote social inclusion, reduce hardship, and empower widows across various communities in Ghana.
