Minority Calls for Suspension of Security Recruitment Over Alleged Irregularities

The Minority in Parliament has called for the immediate suspension of the ongoing security service recruitment exercise, citing serious concerns about the integrity and transparency of the process.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin warned that the large number of young people attempting to join the security services could pose a potential security risk if the recruitment system is not properly managed.

According to him, more than 500,000 youth are seeking enlistment into the various security agencies, a situation he believes must be handled carefully to protect Ghana’s democratic stability.

Afenyo-Markin criticised the digital recruitment platform being used, describing it as misleading and unfair to applicants.

“Can the recruitment process be suspended so that these concerns are properly ironed out? The system that has been introduced, for want of a better word, is duping the youth. The youth are being duped. It is like a scam,” he stated.

He questioned the relevance of some of the questions on the platform, arguing that they have little connection to the duties of the security services.

“How can you introduce a so-called AI platform where you want to go to Immigration and it asks you what the size of a basketball court is?” he added.

Beyond the recruitment issue, the Minority Leader also warned the government against increasing fuel prices amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

He argued that government had previously assured Ghanaians that the country had sufficient fuel buffers, which should prevent any price hikes.

“If indeed we have sufficient buffers, we don’t expect any increase in fuel prices. Government must subsidise because in Akufo-Addo’s era you said the Ukraine-Russia war should not have any effect on Ghana,” Afenyo-Markin stressed.

The Minority maintains that addressing the recruitment concerns promptly will help restore public confidence in the process and ensure fairness for the thousands of young people seeking opportunities within the security services.
