From 34,000 to 40,000 MT: Sahara Group’s New LPG Facility to Secure Ghana’s Energy Future

The Sahara Group’s latest investment in Ghana’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) infrastructure is set to significantly boost the nation’s energy security, according to Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, Esq., Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

Currently, Ghana has a total LPG storage capacity of approximately 34,000 metric tons. With Sahara Group’s addition of a 6,000-metric-ton storage facility in Accra, the country’s total capacity will rise to 40,000 metric tons, providing a critical buffer for future energy needs.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of Sahara LPG Vessel in South Korea , Mr. Tameklo stated, “This expansion is not just an increase in storage; it is a vital step toward ensuring energy security for the nation. It allows Ghana to maintain stability in LPG supply, even during unexpected market fluctuations or supply disruptions.”

He also lauded Sahara Group for its consistent support during previous energy challenges. “I recall last year when Ghana faced a near shortage of aviation turbine kerosene (ATK). Sahara Group stepped in to help, preventing potential loss to neighboring countries and ensuring uninterrupted operations for our airlines,” Mr. Tameklo remarked.

The CEO expressed optimism about the facility’s long-term impact, saying, “With this strategic deployment, Ghana is better positioned to manage its petroleum downstream sector efficiently, while also safeguarding households and businesses that rely on LPG as a cleaner energy source.”
