Ghana Pushes for Reparative Justice and Climate Action at Commonwealth Day

Ghana has called on the Commonwealth to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to address historical injustices, climate change, and economic inequality.

Speaking at the 74th Commonwealth Day flag-raising ceremony in Accra, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, emphasized Ghana’s commitment to international peace, cooperation, and sustainable development within the 56-member bloc.

He urged Commonwealth nations to acknowledge the “enduring consequences of exploitation and inequality” and to support efforts toward reparative justice for countries affected by historical injustices.

The Minister also highlighted the urgency of climate action, particularly for Small Island Developing States and African countries that are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

According to him, Ghana is prioritizing climate resilience, digital transformation, and youth empowerment as part of efforts to navigate emerging global challenges.

He noted that initiatives such as the Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub continue to support member states, including Ghana, in accessing funding for climate-related projects.

Mr. Muntaka further commended Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey for her leadership in modernizing the organization and strengthening collaboration among member states.

He called for renewed solidarity among Commonwealth countries to ensure the association remains dynamic, relevant, and forward-looking.

Meanwhile, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Christian Rogg, reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening cooperation within the Commonwealth.

He described the Commonwealth as a unique family of nations bound by shared values of democracy, rule of law, and mutual respect, adding that the organization continues to play an important role in promoting development, trade, and people-to-people connections.

Mr. Rogg noted that the Commonwealth provides an important platform for member countries to work together to tackle global challenges such as climate change, economic recovery, and youth development.

He also commended Ghana for its active role and leadership within the Commonwealth, stressing that the country remains a key partner in advancing the organization’s shared goals.
