The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that a Ghanaian battalion position serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in Southern Lebanon has come under missile attack amid ongoing exchanges between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Director General of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces, Captain (Ghana Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin, the incident occurred between 1745 and 1752 hours local time when two missiles struck the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters.
The attack left two Ghanaian soldiers critically injured, while another soldier suffered trauma due to the incident.
The statement further indicated that the Officers’ Mess facility at the battalion headquarters was hit and completely burnt down as a result of the missile strike.
“The injured are receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are currently stable while arrangements are underway for their evacuation to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital,” the statement said.
Despite the attack, the Ghana Armed Forces assured the general public that the situation remains under control, noting that troops are currently safe in underground bunkers.
The government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has meanwhile lodged a formal protest at the United Nations Headquarters in New York over the incident.
Authorities have urged all parties involved in the conflict in the UNIFIL operational area to respect their obligations and ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers operating in the theatre.
The Ghana Armed Forces also called on the public to remain calm while monitoring developments in the region.
