The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives Ghana has called for urgent governmental accountability following allegations that long-standing salary arrears owed to its members have inexplicably vanished from official payment vouchers.
In a statement dated February 26, 2026, the coalition expressed shock and deep concern over what it described as potential transparency lapses within the public payroll administration system.
According to the group, several members had their outstanding salary arrears consistently validated on the government’s payroll platform each month, despite not receiving actual payments. However, during the most recent validation exercise for February 2026, the accumulated arrears reportedly “suddenly and completely disappeared” from their payment vouchers.
The coalition further alleged that when the matter was brought to public attention, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department promptly dismissed the claims. The group has since described the denial as troubling and unacceptable.
The coalition also claimed that payroll validators and human resource officers across various health facilities independently confirmed that the arrears had been cleared from the payment vouchers of affected nurses and midwives without any corresponding financial settlement being made.
This discrepancy has raised serious concerns among the affected health workers, who are questioning the legality and administrative authority behind the alleged removal of their entitlements.
“Who authorized the removal of our legitimately earned arrears, and on what legal or administrative grounds were these arrears cleared?” the statement queried.
The coalition condemned the development as unjust and fundamentally dishonest, arguing that the incident reinforces longstanding concerns regarding transparency and accountability in the management of public sector salaries.
The affected nurses and midwives reiterated their commitment to serving the nation but insisted that they cannot accept a situation in which their legitimately earned income is allegedly erased from official records without explanation.
They have therefore urged the Government of Ghana to conduct a swift and thorough investigation, restore the removed arrears, and ensure full payment of all outstanding dues without further delay.
The statement also cautioned that failure to resolve the matter could provoke further action from the group, although it did not specify the nature of any potential measures.
The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department has previously denied the allegations, potentially setting the stage for a broader public payroll dispute should the matter remain unresolved.
