Ghana Scholarship Authority Conducts Competitive Exam to Ensure Merit-Based Awards

Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, the Ghana Scholarship Authority has taken a significant step toward restoring fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity in the award of government scholarships.

In line with the President’s directive to end the practice where scholarships were perceived to favour cronies, the wealthy, and the politically connected, the Authority has introduced a competitive selection process to ensure equitable access for all qualified Ghanaians.

As part of this reform, the Authority, in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Civil Service Training Centre, conducted a high-level competitive examination for prospective applicants under the Hungarian Stipendium programme — a scholarship scheme funded by the Government of Hungary.

The examination covered undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD levels, attracting 3,810 candidates from across the country.

The exercise forms part of efforts to select beneficiaries strictly on merit, reflecting President Mahama’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and equal opportunity in public service delivery.

The Director-General of the Ghana Scholarship Authority, who supervised the examination, assured candidates of the government’s resolve to ensure that scholarship awards are based solely on competence and performance. He further indicated that WAEC will independently mark the scripts to guarantee credibility and integrity in the process.

The Authority extended its best wishes to all candidates as they await the release of results, reaffirming its commitment to building a scholarship system that rewards merit and promotes national development.
