President John Dramani Mahama on Friday held high-level talks with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The bilateral meeting focused on pressing security challenges facing the African continent, particularly the worsening situation in the Sahel region, as well as strategies to strengthen democratic governance across Africa.
During the discussions, Secretary-General Guterres recognized President Mahama’s upcoming role as African Union Chairman in 2027. He commended Ghana’s strong leadership, especially within the West African subregion, and expressed confidence in the country’s capacity to contribute significantly to continental stability and development.
Regional peace and security were central to the talks, with special attention given to the volatile situation in member states of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES). President Mahama briefed the UN chief on his ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at mediating conflicts and restoring stability in the troubled region.
Mr. Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ full support for President Mahama as he prepares to assume leadership of the continental body, recognizing Ghana’s expected role in addressing Africa’s most urgent security and governance challenges.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the UN Secretary-General presented President Mahama with a special gift — a copy of the United Nations Charter translated into all six official UN languages.
