President Mahama Recalls Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria Over Vote-Buying Allegations

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, following allegations of voter inducement during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

Mr. Baba Jamal, who contested in the primaries held on Saturday, is alleged to have engaged in vote-buying activities. Although the allegations were made against multiple candidates who participated in the election, President Mahama noted that Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer among them.

In a directive issued to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the President emphasized the need to uphold high standards of conduct among public officials.

According to the directive, the decision to recall Mr. Baba Jamal was taken without prejudice to ongoing internal investigations by the NDC. The party’s General Secretary has already announced that it has commenced its own probe into allegations arising from the primaries.

President Mahama stated that the move was necessary to protect the integrity of public office and to prevent any perception of impropriety or conflict with the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.

“The President considers it necessary to act decisively to preserve the integrity of public office and to avoid any perception of impropriety,” the statement noted.

The recall takes immediate effect, with the Minister for Foreign Affairs directed to initiate the necessary administrative and diplomatic processes to implement the decision.

The directive was communicated in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
