Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for Ayawaso East, beating Hajia Amina Adam in a tightly contested race.
Baba Jamal received 431 votes, narrowly ahead of Hajia Amina’s 399 votes. Other contenders included Mohammed Ramme (88 votes), Dr. Yakubu Azindow (45 votes) and Mohammed Najib (1 vote), according to the combined results from the constituency’s two voting centers.
The primary attracted significant attention amid debate over campaign practices. Baba Jamal’s team reportedly distributed 32-inch TVs and boiled eggs to delegates, gestures he defended as acts of goodwill rather than vote-buying.
Pre-election projections had suggested a different outcome. Global InfoAnalytics Executive Director Mussa Dankwah had estimated Baba Jamal’s support at 38%, with Hajia Amina, widow of the late MP Mahama Naser Toure, leading at 54%, making the final result a notable upset.
With this win, Baba Jamal will now lead the NDC in the Ayawaso East by-election, a contest expected to draw significant national attention.
