The Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has announced that more than 2,000 people benefited from the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) in 2025, with the programme recording an impressive 99 per cent repayment rate.
According to the Minister, the strong repayment performance has significantly boosted the scheme’s seed fund, which has grown from GH₵27 million to GH₵71.7 million, prompting government plans to recapitalise and expand the initiative.
Speaking during a visit by the Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, to the Ministry of Works and Housing, Mr Adjei said the scheme continues to play a critical role in addressing the high cost of rental accommodation across the country.
“The National Rental Assistance Scheme was introduced to help address the high cost of rental housing. In 2025 alone, we supported 2,031 new beneficiaries, bringing the cumulative total since inception to 4,732,” he stated. “We have achieved a 99 per cent repayment rate, proving the scheme’s sustainability.”
Mr Adjei noted that the Ministry is taking steps to recapitalise the scheme to enable it to support more Ghanaians, particularly in regions that are currently not covered.
He revealed that discussions are underway with financial institutions to establish partnerships that will help scale up the programme nationwide.
“Going forward, we aim to recapitalise the scheme and work with partners to open it up and extend support to other regions,” the Minister added.
The National Rental Assistance Scheme is designed to assist low- and middle-income earners by providing rent advances to reduce the financial burden of paying large upfront rental costs, a major challenge in Ghana’s housing sector.
