NPP Race: Nat’l Security excluded to prevent intimidation at voting centres – Haruna Mohammed

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has revealed that the party’s decision to exclude National Security operatives from its presidential primary security arrangement is based on intelligence suggesting possible interference by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Friday, January 30, he reiterated that the NPP strongly prefers the Ghana Police Service to take exclusive charge of security for the internal election, citing concerns over the alleged conduct of National Security operatives under the current NDC administration.

According to him, the party believes some individuals posing as National Security operatives have in recent times been used to intimidate political opponents and create confusion, a situation the NPP says it wants to avoid during its presidential primary.

He posits that the move is intended to protect the integrity of the election, prevent intimidation, and ensure that delegates are able to vote freely in a peaceful and transparent process.

“We’ve picked up intelligence about certain happenings that the NDC want to perpetrate because of the peaceful nature of the elections we conducted in 2023. They were not very happy with that peaceful election. Now that they have control of national security, and the manner in which they have been using it to bulldoze their way into people’s houses—Ntim Fordjour is a clear example; Adenta Kumi, Abronye, and Wontumi are also clear examples.

“In some instances, some of them are not national security operatives; they are hoodlums of the NDC. They go in, cause mayhem, create confusion, and get away with it. We don’t want any non-uniformed security officer at the venues for the election of our presidential candidate.”
