No National Security at NPP Primary — Party Insists on Police-Only Security

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed that the Ghana Police Service be the sole security agency responsible for providing security at its upcoming Presidential Primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, warning National Security operatives and other unauthorized bodies to stay away from the exercise.

In a statement issued by the Party’s Presidential Elections Committee and signed by the National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP said it would not tolerate the presence or deployment of any non-uniformed, plain-clothed, or unauthorised security personnel at voting centres, collation points, or any activity connected to the conduct of the primary.

“The Ghana Police Service has been formally designated as the only security institution mandated to provide security for the Party’s Presidential Primary,” the statement said.

The Party further disclosed that it had received information suggesting that some elements within National Security were planning to deploy operatives to the election, a move it described as unlawful and unacceptable.

“Any attempt by National Security or any other unauthorised body to deploy operatives will be treated as a deliberate and unlawful intrusion into the internal democratic processes of the Party, with the clear potential to disrupt or manipulate the election,” the statement warned.

The NPP stressed that it would take all necessary legal steps to safeguard the integrity of the process, indicating that any unauthorised presence would be challenged and resisted within the confines of the law.

Commending the Ghana Police Service for its professionalism and capacity, the Party said it expected the Police to strictly enforce the directive and ensure that only duly authorised and clearly identifiable officers are deployed throughout the exercise.

“We expect the Ghana Police Service to enforce this directive firmly and without compromise, in line with the assurances given to the Party,” Mr. Boakye stated.

The NPP Presidential Primary is expected to attract nationwide attention as the Party selects its flagbearer for the next general election.
